Creative Thresholds

These three sequences are inspired by what Wolfgang Goethe wrote about the gondoliers’ songs during his Italian tour.

Luca Rajna is the founder of the photographic studio Luca Rajna Progetti Fotografici (Photographic Projects) and works mainly with weddings and photo shootings. His team of world-class professionals consists of storytellers who have won all the most important awards: World Press Photo, Sony World Photography Awards and so on. The know-how of his team allows him to avoid a single standardized working methodology, getting the most suitable style for every client.

When he takes photographs he always looks for conveying emotions and feelings beyond what is represented: “There is a road from the eye to the heart that does not go through the intellect” taught G.K. Chesterton. Before to become a photographer Luca was a musician and researcher specialized in baroque Venetian music. His wife Maria Rosa is from Venice: her slang easily stands out, so…They got married in 1996, the year in which he did his last concert and was already the leader of a photography studio since two years, after studying photography in Milan from 1992 to 1994 at the CFP Ricccardo Bauer.

At the end of the 90s he was among the first Italian photographers to have a full website and after noticing on the Internet the work of his colleagues from abroad he made the wedding photojournalism philosophy famous in Italy, which was virtually unknown in his country then. In private life he is still fond of ancient (and ethnic) music, loves to translate the Bible from the ancient Hebrew and Greek texts and… would never stop playing Subbuteo (a kind of “Table Soccer” very common in Italy). Luca and his wife chose to live in the country, out of a big city. Their children names are Mattia (Matthew) and Noemi.

Among famous names, Luca learned to framing his images reading the treatises of Vasily Kandinsky, looking at the cinema of Andrei Tarkovsky, and to discover the poetry of the light from the black and white of William Eugene Smith. His favorite photography books are from the analogue era: “L’Isola Intima” [The Intimate Island] by Carmelo Bongiorno and “Venice” by David Hamilton. Recommended Movies: Ushpizin (2004), Fireproof (2008) and Courageous (2011).

Sal Jones is a figurative artist inspired by human interplay, translating visual information into paintings; she develops ideas and themes from photographic sources with an emphasis on the painted surface. A re-interpretation of the portraiture tradition in which she uses colour and mark making as tools to communicate with, producing emotionally charged works, often of fictional personas.

Sal has a BA Hons in Fine Art and has exhibited regularly in London and across the UK. Including: Society of Women Artists annual open exhibition, Mall galleries, London; Id- A Fictional Journey into the Psyche, Display gallery, London; Discerning Eye Mall galleries London; Stopjectify, gallery Different, London. Works are held in private collections in the UK, Europe and the United States.

I am drawn to the unknown, and I have found a way to explore this through the magic of analogue photography. The exploratory nature of the medium is infinite, and my work relies heavily on the element of chance. It’s an all-consuming experience that takes me on a mental journey. It’s when I feel grounded and most at peace.

My largest body of work is housed under the theme of Momento Mori, which means ‘Remember you are mortal’. Here, a curious kind of nostalgia is restored through the re-workings and meticulous experimentation of old family photographs juxtaposed with new photographed subjects and various ephemera; marriage licenses, I.D. books, hand written letters, newspaper clippings, maps, transit ticket stubs etc. These subjects allow me to embark on a search through a history of mine that is unknown to my physical being.

Merging the latter and creating layers with subjects I have photographed, a visual story begins to unfold. I have taken this method of creation a step further and have applied it to creating pieces, like this, for others; re-creating and restoring lost moments and cherished memories through art. I love challenging the conventions of traditional photo and memory archiving and transforming them into personalized photographic artworks.   I am fascinated by history of any kind and learning about the personal history of others enriches my work with many layers of old and new. A deep emotional connection between the individual and the artwork develops and nostalgia is restored.

Another theme I am currently expanding on is Cityscapes and Living Spaces. Travel plays a vital role in my life. It’s another passion that feeds my passion for photography and art. Having the opportunity to aimlessly wonder the streets of an unknown city and capturing various places and spaces is something else I just can’t get enough of. I like to describe this body of work as my visual travel autobiography; I am currently working on Toronto specific works as Toronto is where I am currently living and working.

Each and every photographic work is created through traditional analogue photographic technical practices. The process is an experiential art form in itself.

Originally from South Africa, Deborah Kanfer lives and works in Toronto as a photographic artist. Deborah is currently pursuing her venture in creating personalized photographic fine art works by conceptualizing and restoring nostalgia through art. She also creates a line of jewellery called Keepsake. Each Keepsake item displays a miniature photographic artwork, and all directly correspond to her large scale pieces. Through her work, Deborah aims to capture the mystery of the unknown and to draw the viewer closer. Here, she displays a seamless tie and connection between old and new. Jenny M.L. Wantuch is an artist creating figurative art using traditional media as well as digital media. Inspired by the complexity and beauty of life and nature, and her own imagination, she enjoys exploring her inner and outer world.  In her art, she seeks to find visual harmony and yet allow dynamic movement.  Jenny was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden.  From an early age, she loved to draw, paint and create stories. Her family has for generations worked as farmers, and since the 1600’s lived in the area around Uppsala. During her childhood in Sweden, Jenny spent most of her summers at the farm. She developed a deep interest and appreciation for the beauty of nature. Early influences were her grandfather, a storyteller and draftsman, her aunt, a portrait sculptor and painter, and both her grandmothers whose talents for various crafts seemed to be endless.

Jenny moved to Northern California in 2001. Jenny is a full time artist, working from her studio in Burlingame.  Jenny regularly exhibits her work in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her work has private collectors in USA and in Europe.
